BLACKSBURG – Head coach Justin Fuente confirmed Thursday that Charley Wiles will serve as his defensive line coach at Virginia Tech. Wiles originally joined the Tech staff under Frank Beamer in 1996.
Wiles has enjoyed a long association with Hokies’ defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who was an assistant coach at Murray State during Wiles’ tenure as a player for the Racers. During his 20 seasons in Blacksburg, he has coached five All-Americans, including such greats as Cornell Brown, Corey Moore and John Engelberger – all three of whom have been inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. The Hokies have finished in the top 15 nationally in rushing defense nine times with Wiles as the defensive line coach. Also, no FBS team has recorded more sacks (744.0) than the Hokies since Wiles came aboard.
This past season, Wiles coached Luther Maddy, who earned first-team All-ACC recognition, and Corey Marshall, who was an honorable mention choice to the All-ACC squad. Maddy, a three-time member of the squad, started all 12 games and finished the regular season with 54 tackles and two sacks. Marshall, a two-time member, played in nine games because of injuries and recorded 14 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
