NEW YORK, N.Y. - Announced today, sophomore TE Bucky Hodges has been named one of eight semi-finalists for the 2015 John Mackey Award, given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. Hodges is one of two sophomores on the list, along with Stanford’s Austin Hooper, and one of two tight ends on the list from the ACC, joined by Clemson junior Jordan Leggett.
Hodges, a Virginia Beach, Virginia, native, is currently third on the team in both receptions (27) and receiving yards (414) and is second in touchdowns with five. His 15.3 yards per catch average leads the team, and is the 10th-best in the ACC.
Against Duke, he became the first tight end at the school to catch three touchdown passes in the same game and his 12 total TD catches for his career are ninth all-time at the school and the second-most by a Hokie through a sophomore campaign. In the conference, the 12 TDs are tied for the third most ever by a tight end in a career.
The eight semi-finalists were determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2015 John Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 9, 2015 and presented live on December 10, 2015 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show: 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
