BLACKSBURG – Travon McMillian’s 52-yard touchdown run highlighted a controlled intrasquad football scrimmage Saturday morning at Lane Stadium.

The scrimmage marked the first of the spring for the Hokies, who are coming off a 7-6 season and a win over Cincinnati in the Military Bowl.

McMillian, a redshirt freshman from Woodbridge, Virginia, scored against the second-team defense, and he and D.J. Reid split most of the reps at tailback. J.C. Coleman and Trey Edmunds did not play in the scrimmage.

McMillian’s 52-yard burst was the main chunk of the 66 yards rushing that the Hokies had in the scrimmage. Tech’s offense threw for 77 yards, completing 5 of 14 on a windy day. Brenden Motley worked with the first-team offense, while Andrew Ford and Chris Durkin split reps working with the second team.

Defensively, freshman Adonis Alexander led the way with six tackles, including 1.5 for a los and a sack. Donovan Riley recorded four tackles, while Andrew Motuapuaka and Dadi Nicolas each finished with three. Tech’s defense had five sacks, as Alexander Ricky Walker, Jameion Moss, Deon Clarke and Nigel Williams each recorded one.

Tech’s second scrimmage of the spring will be next Saturday at Lane Stadium and is open to the public. The practice portion starts at 10:45 a.m., with the actual scrimmage starting approximately 30 minutes later.

The Hokies’ annual Maroon-Orange Spring Game will be held on April 25 at 2 p.m.
