BLACKSBURG – Fresh off the hiring of Chuck Cantor as the program’s first director of player personnel for football, Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer announced Monday the appointment of Thomas Guerry to the newly created position of director of high school relations for football.

Guerry, who will work under Cantor and Associate Athletics Director for Football Operations Dr. John Ballein, comes to Blacksburg from Athens, Georgia, where he spent the past four years working with the University of Georgia football program.

“Virginia Tech is a great school and this gives me an opportunity to work with Coach Beamer, who is a tremendous coach and is well respected among his peers,” Guerry said. “I think there is a lot I can offer here in Blacksburg and I can’t wait to get started.

“This is a passion of mine and a dream job. I don’t take any days for granted and I’m thrilled to be here. I can’t wait to work for this staff and the fans here at Virginia Tech.”

At Tech, Guerry will be tasked with enhancing Tech’s recruiting efforts as he takes the lead on communicating with high school football coaches, assisting with official and unofficial visits, and working on increasing the social media presence of Virginia Tech football.

“We are excited about Thomas joining our staff,” Beamer said. “He will provide some fresh ideas in our recruiting efforts and will help with our continuing effort to build relationships with high school coaches.”

Prior to his appointment with Tech, Guerry served for one season as the assistant to the director of football operations before being promoted to the recruiting assistant at UGA in June 2011, and had been in that position for three years.

In that role, he coordinated all official and unofficial visits, events and camps, managed recruiting travel expenses and compliance documentation and maintained an online recruiting database of more than 5,000 high school student-athletics.

He worked closely with the UGA Athletic Association administration to ensure full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations and helped manage more than 70 game day recruiting hosts and student workers. Guerry was also in charge of assessing academic performance of recruits based on NCAA, SEC and UGA academic standards.

Guerry graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mississippi State in 2008 and earned an MBA with a sport administration minor from Mississippi State in 2010. The Madison, Mississippi, native was a trainer for that Bulldogs’ football team for two-plus years and was also the manager and trainer for the men’s tennis team for four years.

Virginia Tech reports for preseason camp on Sunday, Aug. 3 and begins practice on Aug. 4. The program will hold a Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 9 starting at 11:30 a.m. on Worsham Field.
