Former Virginia Tech quarterback Bruce Arians decided to retire from coaching after a long and successful career at many different stops.
Arians, who played at Tech from 1972-74, most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers – a job he had held since 2007 when current Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin took over as the head coach. Arians had served as the receivers coach for the Steelers from 2004-06. During his time with the Steelers, he was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams (2005 and 2008).
Arians also spent time with the Cleveland Browns and with the Indianapolis Colts. In 2001-03, he served as the Browns offensive coordinator, while in 1998-2000, he worked as the Colts quarterbacks coach.
His first work as an NFL assistant came in 1989 when he was named the Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach. Prior to that, he worked at three different colleges – Mississippi State (running backs and receivers coach, 1978-80), Alabama (running backs coach, 1981-82) and Temple (head coach, 1983-88). Temple went 21-45 during his tenure.
For his career, he has worked for five NFL teams and three colleges, including twice working at both Mississippi State (1978-80 and 1993-95) and Alabama (1981-82 and 1997).
After he graduated from Tech, he worked as a graduate assistant for two years.
