Tech cross country teams earn academic recognition

Four runners also receive individual honors from the USTFCCCA for their work in the classroom

BLACKSBURG – Both Virginia Tech cross country teams received recognition for academic excellence Friday, as both were named all-academic teams by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Virginia Tech women’s team received the honor because of the program’s 3.47 cumulative grade-point average. The Hokies’ GPA is the third-highest in the ACC behind Louisville (3.57) and Florida State (3.48).

The Virginia Tech men’s team got the nod because of the program’s 3.26 GPA. That, too, ranked as the third-highest GPA in the ACC behind Syracuse (3.34) and North Carolina (3.30).

Four Tech student-athletes were among 269 named to the USTFCCA’s All-Academic Team, including Daniel Jaskowak, Katie Kennedy, Sarah Edwards and Kayla Richardson. To qualify for the honor, athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finish in the top 25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet.

All four of the Tech recipients were named to the All-ACC Academic Team on Jan. 30 as well.
