BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s cross country team will be making its seventh appearance at the NCAA Championships, as the field for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships was named Saturday afternoon.
The Hokies, who are ranked No. 9 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association national poll, received the bid by virtue of their second-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet held Friday morning at Panorama Farms outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. The top two teams in each regional receive an automatic bid.
Tech is one of 31 teams in the field and one of four ACC teams (NC State, Syracuse and Virginia). The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams received at-large selections. Also, 38 individuals were selected to participate through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
Three of the Hokies’ seven Championships appearances have occurred within the past six years. The Tech men also qualified in 2015 and in 2012. Other appearances occurred in 1969, 1970, 1982 and 1987.
Peter Seufer, Daniel Jaskowak and Patrick Joseph paced the Hokies at Friday’s Southeast Regional, as all three earned All-Southeast Region honors by finishing in the top 25. Seufer and Jaskowak came in ninth and 10th, respectively, while Joseph finished 21st. Jaskowak and Joseph earned all-region honors for the second time.
The Virginia Tech women’s team, which finished fourth at the Southeast Regional, was not selected as an at-large team for the women’s field.
The women’s race at the NCAA Championships starts at 10:45 a.m. next Saturday, while the men’s race begins at 11:45.
