Tech drops middle game of ACC series to visiting Miami

JD Mundy homers for seventh time this season in Hokies loss

BLACKSBURG – The visiting Miami Hurricanes jumped out to an early five-run lead after the first inning Saturday afternoon and then used a seven-run seventh to put the game out of reach as they defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 16-4, in Game 2 of a three-game ACC series at English Field at Union Park.

Tom Stoffel had two hits for the Hokies, including his 10tth double of the season, and JD Mundy hit his seventh home run of the year to lead the Tech offense.

Miami (24-25, 13-13 ACC) used a two-run home run by Tony Jenkins and a three-RBI double from Michael Amditis to open the day’s scoring in the top of the first inning.

Tech (20-29, 8-18 ACC) responded with three runs in the home half to cut into its early deficit. Jack Owens singled and Stoffel doubled before Sam Fragale plated Owens with a sacrifice fly. Nick Menken and Michael Fernandez both picked up two-out RBI singles to make it 5-3 after one.

However, the Hurricanes got another two-run home run from Jenkins in the second and two more runs in the third pushed their lead to 9-3.

Mundy then smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to finish off Tech’s scoring for the day. It was his 12th career home run of which eight have been during conference play – that ties Ronnie Shaban (2009-10) with the most home runs hit in ACC-only play by a true sophomore.

Solid on Friday night, Tech’s bullpen saw just one pitcher on Saturday enter the game and not allow a run to score. Zach Brzykcy tossed 2.0 innings, allowed one hit, walked three, but also struck out three.

• Fragale – stolen base, fifth of the season and career.
• Dylan Hall – two scoreless inning pitched, 23 for the season, 27 in his career.
• Mundy – home run, seventh of the year, 12th of his career.
• Ryan Okuda – three scoreless inning pitched, 20 for the season; one was perfect, seven on the year.
• Stoffel – double, 10th of the season, 47th of his career; two hits, 15th multi-hit game of the year, 55th of his career.

Additional Notes

• Tech turned its second strikeout-caught stealing double play of the weekend, the fourth of the season.
• The double play was the 42nd of the year for Tech, fourth behind Okuda.
• Since Tech joined the ACC (2005), Mundy's 12 career home runs are tied with Shaban for the second most overall behind Mark Zagunis (21012-13), who hit 14 in his first two seasons at Tech, but just six in conference games.
