Career night for Tech's Webb in victory over VMI

Three hits, three RBI in first career start for sophomore helping Tech to 8-3 win

BLACKSBURG – In his first collegiate start behind the plate, sophomore Andrew Webb came through with a 3-for-4 night with three RBI to help the Virginia Tech Hokies to an 8-3 victory over VMI on Tuesday night in nonconference action at English Field at Union Park.

Webb singled home a single run in the second frame as Tech took a 2-1 lead and then capped a 6-0 for the Hokies over the fifth through seventh frames with a two-RBI single that finished off the night’s scoring.

Webb was one of five Hokies with a multi-hit night, with Sam Fragale collecting three hits as well and Nick Owens and Mike Fernandez both scoring twice.

Tech (19-26) got a solid effort from its bullpen as well, with three pitchers combining for 5.1 innings pitched a zero runs allowed. Andrew McDonald picked up his fifth save as he went 2.2 with seven strikeouts, while Nic Enright retired all seven batters he faced with two strikeouts to improve to 2-3 with the win.

VMI (23-21) opened the scoring in the second when Matt Dunlevy scored on a double play and took a 3-2 lead in the third with Matt Pita and Will Malbon each knocking in a run.

The Hokies tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Nick Menken and reclaimed the lead on a solo home run by Stevie Mangrum to lead off the sixth – the start of a three-run frame that included a two-out, two-RBI double from JD Mundy.

Webb’s effort even outshined Tom Stoffel’s two-hit night at the plate, notable because his first single in the fifth was the 200th of his Tech career – the 10th Hokie in the last 14 years to reach the milestone.

The Hokies head to Lynchburg on Wednesday for a game with the Liberty Flames, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start before taking off for a week due to exam week.
