Offense explodes for season-high 19 runs in win over Dayton

BLACKSBURG – JD Mundy kick-started Virginia Tech baseball’s offense on Wednesday night, launching a three-run home run in the first inning – one of four in the game, and Dylan Hall set career highs in innings and strikeouts as the Hokies took care of Dayton, 19-3, on Wednesday night at English Field at Union Park.

Hall, who allowed a leadoff home run in the first inning, settled in after that as he scattered three more hits and two walks over a career-high six innings pitched and struck out a career-high seven batters to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Trailing 1-0, the Hokies offense went to work, with Mundy’s long ball in the first and three more in the second – a two-run homer by Jack Owens and solo shots from Tom Stoffel and Joe Freiday, Jr.

Dayton (7-16) made it 7-2 in the top of the third, however Tech outscored the Flyers 11-0 until the seventh frame, which included a seven-run sixth.

Tech (12-15) saw nine different players cross the plate in the game while nine also collected at least one RBI. Leaders on the night included Jack and Nick Owens each scoring four times, while Jack had a career-high tying four hits and Mundy tallying a career-high four RBI.

Additional Notes

  • The last time Tech scored at least 19 runs was last year at Nevada (Feb. 26) in a 24-10 victory.
  • The last time the Hokies scored at least 19 runs and won by more than 15 was versus Alcorn State (May 8, 2016) in a 23-7 victory.
  • The last time the Hokies hit four (or more) home runs in a game was April 11, 2017 at Radford (4) and they did it seven times last season.
  • The last time Tech hit three home runs in a single inning was March 28, 2017 – Freiday, J. Owens and Ryan Tufts all hit a home run in the second inning versus Campbell.
  • The last two Hokies to go back-to-back was Owens and Tufts in that Campbell game – as Owens and Stoffel did in the second inning of tonight’s game.
  • All-time, Tech is now 14-3 versus Dayton, including a 7-0 mark at home.

Up Next
