Webb with walk-off single to win it for Orange
Hokies end fall season Friday night with thrilling deciding Game 3
November 4, 2017
BLACKSBURG – Trailing by a run in the final frame of the deciding Game 3 of the Virginia Tech baseball Maroon & Orange Fall World Series, the Orange squad used a two-out RBI single by Nick Owens, his third hit of the night, to tie the contest and Andrew Webb hit the first pitch he saw to right field to plate the game-winning run as the Orange squad won the World Series in walk-off fashion 4-3 (videos below).
Both starting pitchers worked two hitless frames to open the contest, with Ryan Okuda striking out the side in the first and Ian Seymour fanning two in two perfect frames.
Orange struck first in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Sam Fragale, but Maroon answered in the top of the fourth with a two-spot – Joe Freiday, Jr. and Mitchell Clarke each collecting an RBI. A Jackson Odenwelder single tied the game back at 2-2 in the home half of the fourth.
Maroon used a Jojo Odachowski sacrifice fly in the fifth to give his team a 3-2 advantage and Grant Squyars worked a scoreless bottom five to keep it there.
Playing just six innings in the game, Graham Seitz, who got the final out of the fifth, struck out a total of three and tossed a scoreless top of the sixth to set up the final frame for the Orange squad to win it.
