Orange evens the series with decisive victory Monday night

Nick Owens had five RBI, while Orange pitchers limited Maroon to six hits

BLACKSBURG – In his first three at-bats of the night, Nick Owens registered five RBI for the Orange team to helped his side to a decisive 10-2 victory in Game 2 of the Orange & Maroon World Series Monday night at English Field at Union Park. With the win, it sets up a winner-take-all Game 3 Friday evening.

In the top of the first, Owens notched his first RBI with a groundball to second, but his two-out, two-RBI single in the second put the Orange team ahead 5-0. In the third, it was another two-out, two-RBI single that ballooned his team’s lead to 8-0.

Also highlighting the Orange offense was Tom Stoffel’s three-hit, two-run night and Sam Fragale crossing the plate a game-high three times. Owens, along with Andrew Webb, each had two hits, while Webb and Fragale each doubled for the winners.

Maroon was limited to just six singles, and also drew six walks, but could only manage the two runs. Jackson Odenwelder was the only one with a multi-hit game as he ended with two hits and an RBI, plating JD Mundy with his team’s first run of the game in the fifth. Darion Jacoby also had an RBI single in the fifth to account for all of Maroon’s runs.

Orange’s Paul Hall, Jr. picked up the win in the start, striking out two in two innings of work. Kyle Transue also tossed two scoreless innings and Graham Seitz closed the game with a scoreless frame.

The Orange squad evened the World Series with a win in Game 2. @pwiz03 gave his team two solid innings to start the game.
