Hokies fall 7-5 to Miami in extra innings
Despite Rahiem Cooper's 10th inning homer, the Hokies' 2017 season ends short of the ACC Baseball Championship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Edgar Michelangelini hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to carry Miami to a 7-5 victory over Virginia Tech in an ACC game played Saturday afternoon at Mark Light Field.
The loss marked the end of the season for Tech, which was trying to qualify for one of the 12 spots at the ACC Baseball Championship next week. The Hokies closed the season with a 23-32 overall mark, 9-21 in the ACC. Miami, which swept the Hokies, moved to 29-26, 16-13.
Tech appeared to be in great shape to win the game after Rahiem Cooper hit a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to break a 2-2 tie and give the Hokies a 5-2 advantage. But Miami scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning off of Tech’s Aaron McGarity, culminating with Michelangelini’s home run.
Even with a win, the Hokies would not have qualified for the ACC Championship. Boston College’s 8-7 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish earlier Saturday eliminated the Hokies from advancing.
Miami got on the board first in the third inning as Johnny Ruiz hit an opposite field two-run home run over the left field wall.
Hurricane starter Jesse Lepore was cruising through four innings. After allowing a leadoff single to Jack Owens that started the game, he retired the next 12 Hokies in order, which included seven strikeouts. However, he lost control in the fifth
Nick Anderson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Mac Caples walked and each moved into scoring position on a Cooper sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Marcus White drew a walk to load the bases and Owens hit a bloop double into shallow left field to score two.
Tech got solid defense, which included two outfield assists from Cooper, who threw out Joe Gomez to end the fourth, trying to stretch a single into a double, and Romy Gonzalez at the plate to end a Miami scoring change in the sixth.
Owens went 3-for-5, with two RBI to lead the Hokies, and Sam Fragale went 2-for-5, with a run. Mac Caples went 2-for-3 with two runs.
