Hokies drop final home game of 2017
The No. 3-ranked Tar Heels shutout Tech to take ACC series

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team lost its final game of the three-game ACC series against third-ranked North Carolina, 20-0, on Sunday afternoon at English Field at Union Park, which gave the Tar Heels the series win in the rubber match.
Sam Fragale and Rahiem Cooper each had two hits in the game and Stevie Mangrum notched his ninth double of the season, but the Hokies could not capitalize on a couple early chances when they trailed 4-0 - they had the bases loaded in the fourth and runners on the corners in the fifth.
North Carolina (41-10, 21-6 ACC) broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth frame to push its lead into double figures then added seven more in the seventh and two in the ninth to complete their scoring.
For the Hokies (22-29, 9-18 ACC), Fragale collected his 19tth multi-hit game of the season and the 35th of his career, while Cooper notched his 12th multi-hit game of season, the 22nd of his career.
OF NOTE
- Today’s game marked the final one for five seniors who will depart at the end of the season. Cooper, along with Ryan Tufts, Kit Scheetz, Matt Dauby and Mac Caples all were honored before the game during Senior Day ceremonies.
- Dauby, who is active in Autism Awareness campaigns, was given a check from Virginia Tech Baseball for more than $5,000 to assist with autism research. His brother Blake also sang the national anthem.
- Fragale and Dauby were selected as the 2017 Johnny Oates Award recipients – which is presented to the player(s) who best exemplifies the traits Oates was known for: a loyal friend and teammate, whose enduring and eternal faith, devotion to family, character, competitiveness, courage and perseverance inspire us all.

- The Hokies will face Old Dominion on Tuesday at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Virginia with first pitch scheduled for Noon before heading to Miami, Florida to take on the Hurricanes in the team’s final ACC series of the year.
