Fragale drives in two in Tech's 6-3 loss at No. 4 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Virginia Tech’s Sam Fragale had two hits and two RBI, which included hitting his ACC-leading 13th home run of the season, but No. 4 Clemson battled back from a two-run deficit to take the second game of the conference series against the Hokies, 6-3, Saturday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Tech (17-16, 6-8 ACC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Fragale knocked in his first run by scoring Jack Owens with a grounder to third. JD Mundy also collected an RBI on a grounder that brought home Tom Stoffel.

The Tigers erased their deficit with three runs in the fourth inning, but Fragale tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the sixth. It pushed his team-leading RBI total to 46, while the 13 home runs are the most since Tyler Horan hit 15 in the 2012 season.

Clemson (27-5, 12-2 ACC) broke the 3-3 tie in the home half of the sixth on a Drew Wharton RBI single and added two insurance runs in the seventh, as Seth Beer hit a solo home run and Logan Davidson raced home on a double steal.

The Tigers’ Alex Eubanks (5-2) went seven innings to pick up the win, while Tech starter Kit Scheetz tossed a season-high 5.0 innings, but did not factor in the decision.

• Hit one home run, its nation-leading 59th of the season – Wake Forest, who was second, ended the day with 57. The 59 home runs are the most hit by a Tech team since the 2011 squad hit 60. The most home runs hit by the Hokies in a single season as a member of the ACC was 81 back in 2010.
• Was hit by one pitch in the game to push season total to 59. The Hokies were tied for second in the nation entering the game in HBPs with Campbell and trailed only Louisiana Tech (61).
