CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In the final game of the regular season for the Virginia Tech baseball team, the Hokies’ starting pitcher Jon Woodcock notched a quality start, however Virginia’s starter Adam Haseley outdueled him and led his team to a 4-1 victory Saturday evening in ACC action at Davenport Field.

After a shaky first inning, Woodcock allowed just one unearned run over the next six frames and, at one point, retired 10 Cavaliers in a row. Paul Hall, Jr. and Ryan Lauria also each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to keep Virginia’s offense off the board, as the three combined to allow just two walks over the final six innings.

The Hokies, though, trailed 3-0 after the first inning and only managed two hits – two Ryan Tufts singles – and no walks off of Haseley the entire game and one unearned run, when Phil Sciretta drove in Tufts with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Haseley picked up his eighth win of the season and is now 8-3 after the complete-game effort. Woodcock ends his year with a 1-8 mark.

How the runs were scored

  • Virginia (36-18, 19-11 ACC) used a two-out rally in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead with key hits coming off the bats of Daniel Pinero (two-RBI double) and Haseley (RBI single).
  • Virginia Tech (19-36, 6-24 ACC) got on the board in the fourth as Tufts scored an unearned run. He led off the frame with a single – the first hit allowed by Haseley – moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a Tom Stoffel grounder. Sciretta knocked him home with a sacrifice fly to right.
  • The Cavaliers plated their own unearned run in the six after a walk and Tech error put runners on the corners. Ernie Clement followed with a sacrifice fly that gave the home team a 4-1 lead.
