The weekend series: Tech concludes its home schedule this week with the final four games of a seven-game homestand. This weekend the Hokies host their final ACC home series as Wake Forest comes to Blacksburg for a three-game set that begins on Friday at English Field at Union Park with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch Saturday and Sunday are scheduled for 1 p.m., with Senior Day on tap for 12:35 p.m. on Sunday as Tech will recognize nine members of its program.
History versus the Demon Deacons: Outside of the records - which Wake Forest holds a slight edge in at 46-39, while Tech is 22-18 at home - the most interesting thing about this series is that the last five times the teams have met, weather has played a factor causing doubleheaders in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015 (which were all split). The teams did not meet in 2014 and in 2013, the team only played two games, with Sunday’s contest canceled due to rain. The last time the two teams played a three-day series was 2009 in Blacksburg with the Saturday game decided in 10 innings.
Jenco leading off the first: This season, Saige Jenco has reached base to start the Hokies’ first inning 22 times (in 41 starts) and has reached base at some point in a game in every start this season, except one. The 22 times also includes 13 times in the last 19 games. However, after scoring a run six of the first seven times he reached base in the first frame (Tech was 5-2 in those games which included winning the first four), Jenco has only crossed the plate four times in the last 19.
Woodcock untouchable out of ACC pen: LHP Jon Woodcock has bounced from starter to relief pitcher several times over his three-year career with Tech. In ACC games, his bullpen numbers are phenomenal - in nine appearances, he’s thrown 25 innings, allowed nine hits, seven runs (two earned for a 0.71 ERA), walked 11 and struck out 22. This season, he’s allowed just one hit in 8.1 frames with six strikeouts and has not surrendered a single run.
Kragel gets rare freshman wins: Freshman relief pitcher Cole Kragel became just the ninth Hokie true freshman to pick up a win in ACC play when he finished off the victory at UNC on April 10. Those nine freshmen did it 13 times, with five victories coming from starters and eight picked up by relievers, which includes his teammates Luke Scherzer (2 in 2014), Connor Coward (1 in 2015) and Chris Monaco (1 in 2015). Packy Naughton won a game as a starter last year at Duke. With his relief win versus Pitt on April 15, Kragel joined Scherzer and Mathew Price (2 as a starter in 2009) as multiple winners in ACC games as true freshmen, while Justin Wright (2 as a starter and 1 in relief) holds the record for most ACC wins by a true freshman with three.
