BLACKSBURG – In the first ever games between the two schools, the Virginia Tech baseball team registered victories of 9-2 and 9-4 over Alcorn State on Saturday evening in nonconference action at English Field at Union Park. Nick Anderson and Ryan Tufts led the offense for the Hokies, while they also got solid pitching performances from all four men who took the mound.

Anderson drove in five in the first game, which included a three-run home run in the eighth inning, while Tufts hit a three-run home run in the fifth frame of the second game – his second of the day. Andrew Mogg, who also homered in the second game, had two runs and two RBIs in the nightcap.

Packy Naughton (3-7) tossed five innings and struck out eight batters to get the win in the first game, as Ryan Lauria earned his first collegiate save with four scoreless frames to end the game. Joey Sullivan (1-0) threw 5.1 innings in Game 2 and struck out four, while Chris Monaco finished the game to also pick up his first collegiate save.

How the runs were scored

• Alcorn State (15-31) actually took a 2-0 lead in the first game on a two-run home run by Walter Vines in the fourth.
• Tech (17-31) scored nine unanswered which started with three in the fifth – Tufts, Tom Stoffel and Anderson all picked up RBIs – which gave them the lead for good.
• RBI doubles by Anderson and pinch-hitter Mogg increased the Hokies lead to 5-2 before a four-run eighth, highlighted by Anderson’s long ball ended the scoring in Game 1.
• Mogg hit a solo home run in the second to open the scoring in Game 2.
• The Braves’ Jason Sanez tied the game up at 1-1 with a solo shot of his one in the third.
• The Hokies answered in the home half, with Sam Fragale, Mogg and Matt Dauby each driving in a run.
• A four-run fifth put Tech up 8-2, as Mogg crossed the plate on a wild pitch just before Tufts blasted his second home run of the day.
• Phil Sciretta closed out Tech’s scoring with an RBI in the seventh.

Up next

The two teams will complete the three-game series with the final game of the set scheduled for a Noon first pitch on Sunday at English Field at Union Park.
