The weekend series: The Hokies have a bye week from ACC action this week and will host SWAC member Alcorn State in a three-game series that starts with a doubleheader on Saturday at English Field at Union Park. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday’s game is set for a 1 p.m. start.

History versus the Braves/SWAC: This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. In addition to that, this will only be the second time Tech will face off against any current school currently in the Southwestern Athletic Conference as the Hokies played Texas Southern back on Feb. 22, 2014. Kit Scheetz tossed 5.0 innings in that game, struck out five and earned his first collegiate win. Other current Hokies who started in the 8-2 win includes Saige Jenco (2 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Tom Stoffel (2 for 5, 2 runs) and Ryan Tufts (0 for 2).

Epic comeback for the Hokies: In Tech’s April 26 win at Liberty, the team matched its biggest deficit overcome to win a game (since joining the ACC) and notched the largest deficit ever overcome entering the eighth frame. On March 14, 2014, the Hokies trailed Pitt 10-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, and came back to win, 11-10. Two other comebacks that are notable include trailing by four (7-3) entering the ninth in a March 9, 2012 game at Virginia - the Hokies won 10-8 in 11 innings and an April 8, 2005 game versus James Madison, down 9-2 entering the bottom of the seventh and won 13-9 (scoring 4-3-4 in the 7th-8th-9th).

Jenco getting the offense started: This season, Saige Jenco has reached base to start the Hokies’ first inning 22 times (in 41 starts) and has reached base at some point in a game in every start this season, except one. The 22 times also includes 13 times in the last 19 games. However, after scoring a run six of the first seven times he reached base in the first frame (Tech was 5-2 in those games which included winning the first four), Jenco has only crossed the plate four times in the last 19.

Kragel gets rare freshman wins: Freshman relief pitcher Cole Kragel became just the ninth Hokie true freshman to pick up a win in ACC play when he finished off the victory at UNC on April 10. Those nine freshmen did it 13 times, with five victories coming from starters and eight picked up by relievers, which includes his teammates Luke Scherzer (2 in 2014), Connor Coward (1 in 2015) and Chris Monaco (1 in 2015). Packy Naughton won a game as a starter last year at Duke. With his relief win versus Pitt on April 15, Kragel joined Scherzer and Mathew Price (2 as a starter in 2009) as multiple winners in ACC games as true freshmen, while Justin Wright (2 as a starter and 1 in relief) holds the record for most ACC wins by a true freshman with three.
