BLACKSBURG – In the rubber match between the two schools, the Pittsburgh Panthers jumped out to an early lead and then held off the Virginia Tech Hokies to register the ACC series win with an 8-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at English Field at Union Park.
Trailing by eight, the Hokies used a three-run rally in the fourth to cut into the Panthers lead. In fact with the bases loaded and down 8-2, Rahiem Cooper almost made it a two-run contest with a grand slam in the frame, but the ball sailed just foul. He plated Sam Fragale with a sac fly to make it 8-3 but Tech would get no closer the rest of the way.
Garrett Wrambel (2-0) tossed the final five innings of the game scoreless and allowed just one hit to pick up the victory for Pitt. Tech’s Packy Naughton (2-5) suffered the loss, while Connor Coward equaled Wrambel’s performance (5.0 IP/2 H/0 R/7 K) to keep the Panthers off the board over the final five frames.
How the runs were scored
- Pitt (17-14, 8-9 ACC) jumped out to an eight-run advantage after three innings, with the big blow coming in a five-run third. A two-run home run by Nick Yarnall made it 5-0. David Yanni and Frank Maldonado added a pair of RBI singles in the third to push the visitor’s lead to 8-0
- Tech (12-25, 3-15 ACC) got its first runs on the board in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Ryan Tufts singled home both Phil Sciretta and Nick Anderson. Matt Dauby followed with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases again before Cooper launched his ball just foul. His sacrifice fly scored Fragale, but the Hokies only managed three hit-by-pitches and a Cooper double the rest of the game.

- Tom Stoffel: 2 HBPs, first time in his career, third time this season a Hokie has been hit by two, double, eighth of the season, 10th of his career.
- Nick Anderson: 2 hits, eighth multi-hit game of the season and his career.
- Fragale: single in the fourth, extending his reached base streak to a career-long 16 straight games, tying for the second longest streak on the team this year.
- Tufts: 2 RBIs, fourth multi-RBI game of the season, sixth of his career.
- Cooper: double, second of the season, fifth of his career; 2 hits, third multi-hit game of the season, 10th of his career.
- Coward: 5.0 IP, longest outing in relief of his career (previous high was 3.0, vs. Radford, April 13, 2016); 7 strikeouts, career-high (previous high was 5, vs. Norfolk State, March 24, 2015); retired first eight batters he faced, pushing career-high to nine straight batters retired (going back to last outing).
