CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ryan Tufts notched his first collegiate home run on Saturday night at Boshamer Stadium to account for Virginia Tech’s lone run in a 4-1 loss to No. 11 North Carolina in the second game of a three-game ACC series with the Tar Heels.
The long ball came in the eighth frame, which was his second hit of the evening, and sparked a late Tech rally, although it produced no runs. After his homer, the Hokies had a first-and-third situation with one out, but that was ended with a double play.
In the ninth, Tech got back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, however UNC went to A.J. Bogucki to close out the game, which he did to earn his first save of the year.
Tar Heel starter J.B. Bukauskas improved his record to 5-1 this season earning the win on the mound, while the Hokies’ Jon Woodcock dropped his record to 1-7.
How the runs were scored
- North Carolina (23-8, 8-6 ACC) got on the board in the fourth using an RBI single by Cody Roberts to plate Tyler Ramirez to take a 1-0 lead.
- In the fifth, UNC used a sacrifice fly by Logan Warmoth to bring home Brian Miller and increase its lead to 2-0.
- The Tar Heels padded their lead in the seventh on a two-out, two-RBI single by Eli Sutherland that scored Miller and Ramirez.
- Tech (10-22, 1-13 ACC) scored its lone run of the night on Tufts’ solo shot to left field in the eighth.
Inside the Box
- Saige Jenco: two walks, pushing his team-lead to 26 for the season; also registered his 500th career at-bat as a Hokie.
- Tufts: 2 hits, seventh multi-hit game of the season, 18th of his career; single in sixth, broke up Bukauskas no-hit bid.
- Woodcock: 6.2 innings pitched, pushing career total at Tech over 150 (156.1).
- Cole Kragel: 1.1 innings pitched, retired all four batters he faced, included two strikeouts.

The Hokies conclude their ACC series with the North Carolina on Sunday with first pitch at Boshamer Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
