BLACKSBURG – For the third straight game at English Field at Union Park, Notre Dame took an early lead on Virginia Tech, but this time the Hokies were able to get back to within a run. They could not complete the comeback though, as they dropped the final game of the three-game ACC baseball series to the Fighting Irish on Saturday afternoon, 5-2.
Jon Woodcock allowed single runs in the first, second and third, but settled in and threw the next five frames scoreless. Behind a two-run fifth, Tech made it a 3-2 contest before the Irish put the game away with two runs in the ninth.
Notre Dame’s Peter Solomon improved to 1-2 with the win, while David Hearne earned his first save of the year. Woodcock’s record fell to 1-5 with the loss.
How the runs were scored
- Notre Dame (12-10, 4-5 ACC) scored a single run in each of the first three innings – sacrifice fly by Zak Kutsulis in the first, RBI single by Nick Podkul in the second and a solo home run by Cavan Biggio in the third – to claim an early 3-0 lead.
- Tech (10-15, 1-8 ACC) cut its deficit to one with two runs in the fifth. Sam Fragale, who singled to lead off the frame, scored on Rahiem Cooper’s sacrifice fly, and Matt Dauby crossed the plate on Grant Maiorana’s RBI single.
- The Irish were able to use a Tech error to put two more on the board in the top of the ninth, with Kyle Richardson plating one with a sacrifice fly.
Inside the Box
- Maiorana: RBI, 15th of the season, tied for third on the team.
- Anderson: double, sixth of the season; 2 hits, sixth multi-hit game of the season.
- Dauby: run, 20th of the season, second most on the team.
- Woodcock: 8.0 innings pitched, season and career high – previous high was 7.0 IP done five times last year; quality start, first of the season, seventh of his career.
Up next
The Hokies take a couple days off before heading on the road for their next four games. They travel to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start before heading to Louisville, Kentucky for a three-game ACC series with the Cardinals next weekend.
