BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech starting pitcher Kit Scheetz registered his fourth quality start of the 2016 campaign on Friday night against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but the Hokies could not support his effort and dropped a 6-2 decision in ACC action at English Field at Union Park.
Scheetz tossed 6.1 innings, his second longest outing of the season, and struck out a season-high tying six batters – also tying the most he’s struck out in an ACC game – and allowed only three earned runs. Out of the bullpen, Ryan Lauria pitched the final 2.2 innings scoreless and struck out a career-high tying four batters.
However, the Hokies offense could only muster two runs in the seventh frame off Notre Dame starter Sean Guenther, who improved to 2-2 with the win. Scheetz dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
How the runs were scored
- Notre Dame (11-10, 3-5 ACC) took a 6-0 lead after three frames, using three Tech errors to plate three unearned runs. Cavan Biggio had a key two-RBI double in the second, part of a three-run frame. The Irish scored a single run in the first and two in the third.
- Tech (10-14, 1-7 ACC) got on the board in the seventh as Ryan Tufts singled home Joe Freiday, Jr. with the first run and Rahiem Cooper scored on a Notre Dame error to make it 6-2.
Inside the Box
- Tufts: 2 hits, fourth straight multi-hit game, sixth of the season, 17th of his career.
- Phil Sciretta: 2 hits, 11th multi-hit game of the season, 29th of his career
- Cooper: 2 hits, first multi-hit game of the season, eighth of his career.
- Scheetz: quality start, the 12th of his career; 6 strikeouts, also had six at The Citadel (Feb. 21) in 6.2 innings this season, and had six at Georgia Tech on May 4, 2014.
- Lauria: 4 strikeouts, also had four in 4.1 innings versus Liberty (March 15).

The two teams will conclude the ACC series at English Field at Union Park with the final game of the set scheduled for Saturday with a Noon first pitch.
