ATLANTA – The No. 22 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored in each of the first five innings to take a commanding 12-run lead and cruised to a 14-4 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies in the first game of an ACC baseball series at Russ Chandler Stadium Friday night.

Both Grant Maiorana and Phil Sciretta extended their career-long reached base streaks in the sixth frame and that resulted in Virginia Tech’s first run. The Hokies would add three unearned runs in the ninth to finish off their scoring.

GT starter Brandon Gold, who went seven innings, improved to 2-1 on the season after earning the win, while Packy Naughton dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

How the runs were scored

  • Georgia Tech (13-4, 1-3 ACC) sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the first with the key hit a two-out, bases-clearing double by Tristin English that put his team up 5-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored single runs in the second and third, had a three spot in the fourth and added two more in the fifth to increase their advantage to 12-0.
  • Virginia Tech (10-9, 1-3 ACC) got on the board in the sixth on an RBI single by Sciretta that scored Maiorana, who was aboard after a one-out double.
  • GT added single runs in the seventh and eighth to conclude its scoring.
  • In the ninth, Mac Caples reached on an error, moved to third on a Garrett Hudson single and scored on another GT error. Hudson came home when Maiorana drew a bases-loaded walk. Sciretta then singled to plate Fragale.
