DURHAM, N.C. – In the second play-in game of the ACC Baseball Championship on Tuesday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the Virginia Tech baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to the North Carolina Tar Heels and was eliminated from the tournament.
Tech had its chances in the game, as the Hokies stranded 10 runners on base. However, it was a couple costly errors that hurt the Hokies in the end as North Carolina capitalized on two Tech miscues to push four unearned runs across the plate.
The Hokies (27-27) led the game 1-0 after two innings. Max Ponzurick singled to lead off the frame and moved to third after a Mac Caples walk and a Ryan Tufts sac bunt. With two outs, Sam Fragale loaded the bases with a walk before Saige Jenco single to right to score the first run of the contest.
In the top of the fourth, Tech threatened again with Caples hitting a leadoff double and moving to third on a one-out single by Andrew Mogg. Fragale appeared to draw another walk to load the bases, but was called out on strikes before the frame was ended on a fly ball to center.
It was then, the bottom of the fourth that proved the difference as the Tar Heels broke through on the scoreboard when a leadoff error started a three-run inning in which all three runs were unearned.
North Carolina (33-22) turned another error into an unearned run in the fifth that gave the home team a 4-1 advantage.
The Hokies cut their deficit to 4-3 after the top of the eighth. In the seventh, an RBI single by Alex Perez that scored Jenco, who hit a two-out double for his third hit of the game, made it 4-2 and Ponzurick scored on an error that made it a one-run contest.
North Carolina responded by scoring its only earned run of the game in the home half of the frame on an Elijah Sutherland RBI single.
Tar Heel starter Zac Gallen improved to 4-3 on the season after tossing 6.2 innings and striking out seven. Trevor Kelley finished the game for North Carolina to pick up his fourth save.
Tech starter Kit Scheetz (3-4) went four innings and struck out two while not allowing an earned run. Luke Scherzer went 2.1 innings and also allowed an unearned run, while Aaron McGarity finished the game for Tech.
