BLACKSBURG – In a critical ACC series that features two teams just outside the conference’s postseason tournament, the Virginia Tech Hokies were able to pick up the 5-3 victory over Boston College in the first of a three-game set Friday evening at English Field.
With the win, the Hokies improved to 5-4 this season in ACC game 1s and are now 10-14 in league play, 23-24 overall as they have also won four in a row. The Eagles dropped to 9-15 in the ACC and 24-22 on the season.
Kit Scheetz earned the win and is now 3-2 after tossing 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run. He scattered seven hits and four walks while striking out three. Despite the 11 base runners while he was on the mound, he held Boston College hitless (0-for-10) with runners on base.
The Eagles did take a 1-0 lead in the third that started with a leadoff double by Jake Palomaki. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Butera, but that would be all they would get off Scheetz.
Tech got its first run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Sam Fragale that drove in Brendon Hayden, but a three-run fifth inning was what turned the game in favor of the Hokies.
With one out, Saige Jenco blasted his third home run of the year – a solo shot off the scoreboard – to start the scoring and after a Rahiem Cooper walk and an Alex Perez single, Hayden and Erik Payne hit back-to-back RBI singles that pushed the Tech lead to 4-1.
Boston College put runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, which prompted a call to the Hokies’ bullpen. Aaron McGarity ended the threat, but was tagged for two runs – one earned – in the eighth that pulled the Eagles to within a run.
Tech managed an insurance run in the bottom of the frame when Jenco hit a two-out single to left that plated pinch runner Logan Bible.
McGarity closed out the game to pick up his second save of the season, while BC starter Mike King was tagged with the loss and is now 1-4.
The two teams will return to the field on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
