The weekend series: Tech continues season No. 122 of baseball at the school by “hosting” the Toledo Rockets of the Mid-American Conference. Due to the cold temperatures expected this weekend in Blacksburg, the teams have agreed to move the weekend series from English Field to The Ripken Experience located in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where the forecast is expected to be in the 50s with no chance of snow.
Facing Toledo and the MAC: In Tech’s history against Toledo, the two teams have only met three times - with wins by the Hokies in all three games. Last season, the Hokies and Rockets were supposed to meet at the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but the game on Sunday was cancelled.
Schools from the MAC have not taken it easy on the Hokies, as Tech holds just a 29-25 edge versus teams currently in the league. Ohio actually has a 14-9 record against Tech, while Central Michigan is 3-0 - the only two programs with winning records against Tech in the league. The last MAC school to face Tech was Kent State as the two teams opened the 2013 season against each other. The Hokies dispatched the Golden Flashes, 10-9 and 8-1, in a tournament in Wilmington, N.C.
Perez is the nation’s Ironman: Entering the weekend, senior Alex Perez is just one of five players in Division I baseball to have started in every one of his team’s games since stepping foot on campus. Perez’ 177 consecutive starts is currently the longest streak in the nation and is the longest streak to start a career at Tech. Of his 177 starts at Tech, 126 have been at second base, 49 have been at shortstop and two have been on the mound.
Starting pitching solid through first two weekends: Despite the Hokies’ 3-4 record, Tech’s starting pitching has been quite solid for the team since the start of the season. The overall staff ERA is 3.86, but the four starting pitchers have combined for a 3.00 ERA in 42 innings pitched (an average of six innings per start). They have also struck out a combined 38 batters opposed to 11 walks.
Opponents are hitting just .164 against starters and are slugging just .286. Aaron McGarity, Jon Woodcock and Kit Scheetz all set career highs in innings pitched last weekend as they each sent seven frames, while McGarity (7) and Woodcock (8) upping their career highs in strikeouts as well.
