ATLANTA, Ga. – Virginia Tech’s Brad Markey tossed his second complete game of the season and fourth of his career but came up on the short end of a pitchers’ duel against Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon in ACC action at Russ Chandler Stadium as the Hokies fell 3-1.

Markey retired the first eight batters he faced and through five frames made one mistake – A.J. Murray hit a solo home run in the fourth that tied the game at ones.

The Yellow Jackets (28-19, 14-12 ACC) scratched a go-ahead run across the plate in the sixth when Mott Hyde singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on Connor Justus’ RBI single.

Georgia Tech added an insurance run in the eighth when Matt Gonzalez singled home Daniel Spingola, who tripled to lead off the inning.

Markey (2-7) allowed the three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out four, while his counterpart Devin Stanton (4-3) kept the Hokies off the board sans one inning over seven innings. He scattered six hits, walked two and struck out five. Sam Clay threw the final two innings, the ninth perfect, to pick up his fifth save of the year.

Virginia Tech (18-27-1, 7-19 ACC) got men on base, but a couple of base-running mistakes hurt them. Ironically, the Hokies only run was scored on a heads up base-running decision by Miguel Ceballos in the third inning.

With runners on the corners, Stanton threw over to first to force Alex Perez back, but Ceballos broke home on the throw and scored just under Mitch Earnest’s tag at the plate giving the Hokies the 1-0 advantage.

The Hokies had first and third in the first inning, with two outs, but Brendon Hayden was caught trying to steal second to end the threat. Then in the eighth, they had first and second with no outs and Mark Zagunis was caught off second and Hayden was left stranded – one of eight left on in the game.

Hayden and Phil Sciretta each had two hits in the game, while Zagunis reached base three times – a hit by pitch, a single and a walk – and Perez was on twice as well – single and walk. Saige Jenco aso notched his 19th stolen base of the year.

The two teams will play the final game of the three-game conference series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m..
