LYNCHBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then held on to defeat No. 30 Liberty in nonconference action at Liberty Baseball Park Monday evening in a game resceduled from earlier this season.
With the win, Tech has now won four of its last five and improved to 18-17-1 overall, while the Hokies ended the Flames' seven-game winning streak, their eight-game home-winning streak and dropped Liberty to 29-9.
On the third pitch of the game, Saige Jenco sliced a ball down the left-field line where Andrew Yacyk tried to make a diving catch. The ball came out of his glove and Jenco raced around the bags for an inside-the-park home run.
Alex Perez followed with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Zagunis and Tech led 2-0.
In the third, Jenco and Perez led off the frame with back-to-back singles and Zagunis drove in Jenco on a ground-rule double. One out later, Phil Sciretta brought in Perez on a squeeze play and the Hokies led 4-0.
Tech starter Kit Scheetz worked flawlessly through the first four innings, allowing just an infield single in the third to Yacyk. Two innings later, Yacyk would hit a two-run home run to cut the Flames' deficit in half and Ryan Seiz made it a one-run game with a solo home run in the sixth.
Luke Scherzer came in to relieve Scheetz, who struck out five in six innings, in the seventh and tossed the final three innings allowing just one walk and striking out two to pick up his fifth save of the year. Scheetz improved to 3-1 with the victory, while Liberty starter Jared Lyons dropped to 2-2.
The Hokies will return to action on Tuesday as they face Tennessee in the Hokie-Smokey Classic at LewisGale Field on Tuesday with a scheduled 6 p.m. first pitch.
