RICHMOND – The Virginia Tech baseball team took a five-run lead on its host for the game, VCU, only to see the Rams score 11 unanswered over the seventh and eighth frames combined to register the 11-6 win in nonconference action at The Diamond Tuesday night.

Brendon Hayden led the Hokies at the plate, knocking in four of Tech’s six runs, including the first in the third on a sacrifice fly that opened the scoring in the game.

After Alex Perez gave Tech a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the seventh – scoring Ricky Surum with his second run of the game – Hayden followed an intentional walk by Mark Zagunis that loaded the bases with a two-run double to make it 4-0 and Zagunis then scored on a wild pitch.

Tech starter Kit Scheetz held the VCU lineup in check through the first six innings, scattering just five hits and striking out nine. However, three straight singles to open the seventh saw the Hokies go to the bullpen, which could not stop the Rams.

After plating four in the seventh, the Rams’ Logan Farrar hit a two-RBI triple and Vimael Machin hit a bases-clearing double as part of a seven-run eighth inning for VCU that turned a one-run deficit into an 11-5 advantage.

Hayden added an RBI double in the ninth, scoring Zagunis with his second run of the night, as both, along with Perez and Phil Sciretta, notched two-hit games.

Tech will return to the field to face Longwood at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at English Field before turning its attention back to the ACC. The Hokies will face Maryland this weekend in a home conference series.
