BLACKSBURG – Trailing 5-3 entering the eighth frame, the Virginia Tech baseball team scored five runs in the inning – which also included another stoppage due to a lighting issue – and went on to defeat Radford, 8-5, Wednesday evening at English Field.
The Hokies improved to 14-12-1 with the victory and are 10-3 at home this season, while Radford dropped to 15-12 with the loss.
The rally started when Ryan Tufts singled to lead off the inning, his second hit of the night. Saige Jenco drew a walk and Alex Perez followed with a single as well. That brought Mark Zagunis to the plate, who has been hitting better than .400 since March 10.
Zagunis was in the exact same situation five innings earlier – bases loaded, no outs in a 1-1 game, and he came through with a two-RBI single that scored Tufts and Jenco and put Tech up 3-1.
This time, he did the same thing, singling home both Tufts and Jenco to tie the game at 5-5, which pushed his RBI total to a career-high tying four. Brendon Hayden then came to the plate and saw two balls before the lights went out.
After a 19-minute delay, the lights came back on, the game was resumed and Hayden drew a walk. Sean Keselica repeated Zagunis’ effort with a two-RBI single and the Hokies took a 7-5 lead. Hayden would later score on a passed ball to give Tech an insurance run.
Luke Scherzer came on to close the game and did allow a one-out walk and a two-out single, but struck out the last Highlander batter to pick up his fourth save of the season.
In relief, Kit Scheetz earned his second win of the year and is now 2-1, while Radford’s Michael Costello dropped to 2-1 on the season with the loss.
Zagunis led the Tech offense with a three-hit night, while Tufts, Hayden and Phil Sciretta each had two hits.
The Highlanders had a hit in every inning and were led by Patrick Marshall’s four-hit, three-RBI night.
Tech will take a day off before hosting an ACC series with No. 24 Miami at English Field, which starts on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
