BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech baseball jumped out to an early five-run advantage and rode its bullpen for most of the game to post its fourth straight win, a 6-3 victory over Rutgers in nonconference action at English Field Wednesday night.

The Hokies are now 10-8-1 on the season and with the victory notched their 1,200th career win in Blacksburg, as 430 have come at English Field and 431 at Tech Park. Rutgers dropped to 7-10 with the loss.

After the Hokies loaded the bases with one out in the first – with two walks and a single – Sean Keselica and Tom Stoffel hit back-to-back two-RBI doubles to put Tech up 4-0. Ricky Surum then hit a two-out double to plate Stoffel with the fifth run.

The pitching staff took it from there. Tech’s starter Luis Collazo did allow a bases loaded double in the third, but the Hokies’ relief pitchers of Jon Woodcock (1.1 IP/1 K), Phil Sciretta (1.0/2), Tanner McIntyre (1.1/4), Sean Kennedy (1.2/1) and Luke Scherzer (1.0) combined to toss 6.1 scoreless innings to keep Rutgers off the board.

The Hokies added an insurance run in the eighth frame, as Alex Perez drew a two-out bases loaded walk to score Stoffel.

Sciretta improved to 2-1 with the win, while Scherzer saved his second game of the season. Rutgers’ Kevin Baxter suffered his third loss of the year.

Tech now heads out on the road for its next seven games starting with a three-game ACC series with Notre Dame. The schedule has changed as the teams will play one game in South Bend, Ind., on Friday at 5:35 p.m., with the other two being contested in Westfield, Ind. – Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
