BATON ROUGE, La. - Playing in the Pelican state for the first time since 1995 - as a member of the Metro Conference - Virginia Tech baseball dropped its first game of the LSU Tournament, 9-0, to the host Tigers at Alex Box Stadium Friday night.

No. 2 LSU (5-0) used three Hokie errors to put seven runs on the board in the first three frames and cruised to victory behind its starting pitcher Aaron Nola. The junior struck out eight, walked one and did not allow a hit over his seven innings pitched to pick up his second win of the year.

Tech's starter Brad Markey allowed six hits, seven runs, just one earned, though, and walked one in 2.1 innings and suffered his first loss of the year.

It wasn't until the top of the eighth - against relief pitcher Alden Cartwright - that the Hokies registered their first hit. With two outs, pinch hitter Tom Stoffel lined a single through the right side.

In the ninth, Alex Perez, who was robbed of a base hit in the first inning on a great diving catch by Tiger left fielder Mark Laird, also notched a single, but Tech would strand all four of its base runners in the contest.

Sean McMullen, with a three-run home run, and Christian Ibarra, with three RBIs, led the Tiger's offense, who made the most of their nine hits. They did benefit from six walks and a hit batsmen to go along with the three Tech errors.

Seeing their first action of the year as relief pitchers were Jon Woodcock and Luke Scherzer. Woodcock tossed three scoreless frames with three strikeouts, while Scherzer tossed a perfect eighth.

The Hokies (1-2) will return to the field on Saturday to face Texas Southern, a team that lost just 1-0 to Toledo in the earlier game on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET).
