CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – In the team’s sixth extra-inning game of the season, which sets a school record, No. 25 Virginia Tech defeated Boston College in 12 innings, 1-0, Friday afternoon in ACC action at Pellagrini Diamond.
Mark Zagunis scored the game-winner for the Hokies, who won their fourth game overall, fifth straight on the road and third straight in conference. They are now 29-18 this season and 12-13 in the ACC, while Boston College dropped to 10-36 overall and 2-22 in the league.
It was a classic pitchers’ duel as Tech’s Joe Mantiply and the Eagles’ Hunter Gordon matched scoreless frame for scoreless frame.
The Hokies had a man on in every inning against Gordon, except the sixth, but only got a runner to second on three occasions. Gordon threw nine frames, allowed seven hits and two walks, and struck out eight. He was helped by a pair of double plays turned behind him.
Mantiply worked three perfect frames of the seven scoreless innings he tossed. However, in both the second and seventh, Boston College managed to load the bases with two outs. Mantiply would end each threat to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. His line was seven innings, two hits, four walks and six strikeouts.
The game went to the Hokies bullpen in the eighth and Jake Joyce (1.2 IP/1H/1BB/3K) and Clark Labitan (1.1IP/1BB/1K) kept the game scoreless through the 10th, while BC’s Nick Poore took over for Gordon and pitched two scoreless frames in the 10th and 11th.
In the home half of the 11th, Brad Markey came in from the pen and was perfect with a pair of strikeouts.
Poore struggled in the 12th, hitting Zagunis and allowing a single to Andrew Rash. Brendon Hayden then put down a bunt and an errant throw to third to get the lead runner Zagunis allowed him to come home. However, John Gorman then closed the inning without another runner scoring.
Markey went three up, three down with a strikeout and got two ground ball outs to finish the game and improve his record to 4-4, while Poore’s record dropped to 1-3.
The two teams will play another game in the series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The game will also be part of Boston College’s Second Annual ALS Awareness Game - click here for details.
