CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Despite a ninth-inning rally that saw No. 24 Virginia Tech score seven times, the home team Miami held on and recorded an 11-9 victory over the Hokies on Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park in the first of a three-game ACC series.

Chad Pinder and Tyler Horan, who both had three hits on the night, each hit two-out two-RBI doubles in the rally that pulled the Hokies to within 11-8. Logan Bible, who was inserted as a pinch runner for Mark Zagunis – who actually led off the inning with a walk – then reached first on an error and Horan scored to make it 11-9.

Miami closer Eric Nedeljkovic came on to get the final out and earn his fifth save as Hurricane starter Chris Diaz improved to 3-1 with the win. Tech starter Brad Markey suffered the loss and is now 2-2.

Tech (17-6, 4-3 ACC) jumped on Diaz in the first frame with back-to-back singles and Horan drove home Gary Schneider for the first of his team-high three RBI in the game. Zagunis brought home Sean Keselica and the Hokies led 2-0.

Miami (18-7, 3-4 ACC) used a four-run third frame to take a 5-2 lead, and then tacked on three runs in both the seventh and eighth to make it 11-2.

The teams will play the second of the three-game set on Saturday with first pitch scheduled again for 7 p.m.
