BLACKSBURG - No. 14 Georgia Tech used 18 hits, all but three were singles, to register a 14-9 decision over No. 24 Virginia Tech, with the big inning coming in the seventh when the Yellow Jackets scored six unearned runs to retake the lead and claim the ACC victory at English Field.
In the contest, the lead changed dugouts six times as two errors by each team allowed 10 unearned runs on the day.
Virginia Tech (11-4, 0-2 ACC) struck first with a single run in the first - Chad Pinder knocked in the first of three runs with a sac fly that scored Gary Schneider, one of two of his runs scored.
Georgia Tech (14-1, 2-0 ACC) answered in the top of the second, using six singles to plate four runs.
Back came the Hokies, scoring in the bottom of the second on a Brendon Hayden solo home run and then, they used a Jacket error to score three unearned runs, four total, in the third, which chased GT starter Dusty Isaacs.
The visitors answered with three runs to retake the lead, tying the game in the fourth and then plating a single run in the sixth, the first of their unearned runs.
The Hokies responded and took a 9-7 lead, as a two-out two-RBI double by Sean Keselica and a RBI single by Pinder put them back on top.
Georgia Tech chased Hokie starter Brad Markey in the seventh after an error and single put runners on first and second with no outs.
A reliable bullpen, which had a 3-1 record with five saves and a 3.97 ERA entering the day, could not hold back the Georgia Tech offense, as the Yellow Jackets sent 12 men to the plate in the seventh and scored six runs, with the error to lead off the frame proving costly.
Alex Cruz, who replaced Isaacs, picked up the win out of the pen, while Jonathan King tossed the final two frames perfect. Clark Labitan suffered the loss.
The Hokies and Yellow Jackets will conclude their first ACC series of the year on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time.
