CARY, N.C. – In a pitchers' duel on Saturday night at Coleman Field, Notre Dame’s Adam Norton got the better of Virginia Tech starter Brad Markey and helped his No. 22 team defeat the No. 25 Hokies, 3-0, in the second day of the Irish Baseball Classic.
Norton earned the complete game shutout by throwing six perfect frames and working out of a pair of jams. He improved to 3-0 on the season with the four-hit, one-walk, five-strikeout performance.
Markey was just as impressive, as he struck out seven batters in eight innings while allowing five hits and no walks. One pitch in the fourth and an error in the eighth was all the offense the Irish needed as Markey’s record dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
Notre Dame (8-1) got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a Trey Mancini two-run home run – a ball that was slicing toward the right field foul pole and just cleared the wall.
That followed a top of the fourth that saw the Hokies put runners on first and second with one out. However, a Mark Zagunis fly out to the wall and a Tyler Horan popup ended the Tech threat.
Mancini drove in his third run of the game with a single in the eighth, an unearned run to make it 3-0.
The Hokies (10-2) did not go quietly, as they mounted a two-out rally in the ninth on back-to-back singles by Zagunis and Chad Pinder. Norton, though, got the final out with a popup and gave the Irish the win.
Tech will finally finish a nine-game, nine-day stretch with a single contest against Tennessee on Sunday at Coleman Field with a noon first pitch.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: The game lasted 1:52 minutes, Tech’s fastest game of the year, and the fastest since a 1:41-contest versus Bryant on March 4, 2011. The Hokies were looking to become just the fifth team in school history to have 11 wins by their 12th game (1987, 1982 and 1920 – 11-1; 1915 – 12-0).
