TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 4 Florida State Seminoles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium in the final game of the three-game ACC series.
Chad Pinder hit two solo home runs for Tech, while Alex Perez reached base four times, which included a single and three walks. Marc Zagunis also had a two-hit day for the Hokies, his eighth of the season.
Florida State (24-4, 11-1 ACC) used a two-out rally in the first inning to jump out to a six-run lead. Two walks sandwiched a single which loaded the bases and Justin Gonzalez followed with a grand slam to left. A walk and back-to-back doubles brought home two more with Jose Brizuela notching two RBI.
The Hokies (18-12, 2-10 ACC) appeared to have an answer to the FSU first as they loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the second. Zagunis and Andrew Rash each hit infield singles and Pinder drew a walk to fill the bases.
However, FSU starter Peter Miller ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.
Tech would get its first run of the game an inning later as Johnny Morales would drive in Ortiz with a grounder to the shortstop. Pinder hit his first home run in the fourth inning to give the Hokies a second run, but that was after FSU put four on the board in the bottom of the third.
Pinder blasted his second home run of the game in the sixth inning, his fourth of the season, and in the seventh, Ortiz scored his second run of the afternoon on an RBI single by Zagunis to make it 11-4.
Miller improved to 4-1 with the win after going five frames with five strikeouts. Andrew Aizenstadt suffered the loss for Tech and is now 2-2. After the third inning, the Hokies’ bullpen of Eddie Campbell (1 IP), Tanner McIntyre (2), Jake Joyce (1) and Sean Keselica (1) did not allow an earned run the rest of the way.
Tech takes a day off before welcoming Wofford to English Field for a two-game, non-conference midweek series starting on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
