HIGH POINT, N.C. – Virginia Tech scored nine unanswered runs, included five in the top of the eighth, to turn a 2-1 deficit into an eight-run lead and cruised to a 10-6 victory over High Point in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Williard Stadium.
The Hokies had three players – Johnny Morales, Chad Morgan and Brendon Hayden – drive in two runs each as they improved to 7-2 on the season, while High Point fell to 6-3 with the loss.
Tech quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Alex Perez walked to open the game and moved to third on a Morales single and scored on a Jake Atwell grounder.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead and in the fourth and fifth threatened for more, but could not plate any insurance runs, which included leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.
The Hokies used a two-out rally to tie the game in the sixth as Atwell notching his fifth extra-base of the season with a double and scored on a Chad Pinder double, which extended his hitting streak to all nine games this season.
They took a 5-2 lead in the seventh as Andrew Rash, Sean Keselica and Perez all scored, as Keselica drove in Rash with a single and Morales driving in two with a double.
Tech sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth as the first six reached base and the first five scored with Rash registering one RBI, Morgan driving two in with a double and Hayden plating two with a single.
Eddie Campbell, who came on in the fifth and worked 2.2 scoreless frames with two strikeouts, earned the win on the mound, while starter Andrew Aizenstadt went 4.1 with two strikeouts as well. Jake Joyce closed the game, throwing two innings allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Tech will take the rest of the week off before playing its home opener at newly enhanced English Field. The Hokies welcome Yale to Blacksburg for a four-game series starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and single games on Sunday (1 p.m.) and Monday (5:30 p.m.).
