McFadden named ACC Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore David McFadden has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after defeating three ranked opponents en route to capturing the 165-pound title at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, last week.

In all, McFadden, defeated five opponents, including 18th-ranked Jon Jay Chavez of Cornell in the quarterfinals, seventh-ranked Te’Shan Campbell of Ohio State in the semifinals and 17th-ranked Evan Wick of Wisconsin in the finals.

His fall over Wick marked the first pin in the finals at the Cliff Keen since 2013. He becomes only the third Virginia Tech wrestler to capture an individual title at the tournament. He led Tech to a sixth-place finish, the highest of any ACC school.

The honor for McFadden was his second of the young season, as he was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 15.

The No. 10 Hokies return to action this weekend when it faces Princeton in the annual Grapple at the Garden on Sunday, Dec. 10, in the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
