GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore David McFadden has been named Co-ACC Wrestler of the Week after going 3-0 and winning an individual title at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic last weekend, the conference announced Wednesday.
McFadden shares the award this week with NC State’s Kevin Jack.
McFadden started his weekend with a convincing 17-1 tech fall of Kent State’s Isaac Best in 3:40 before topping Lehigh’s Gordon Wolf by decision, 11-7. In the pool B championship bout at 165 pounds, McFadden squared off with then-No. 4 Chandler Rogers of Oklahoma State. McFadden trailed 3-2 in waning seconds of the third period but was able to register a takedown with three seconds left to secure the 4-3 decision.
The West Milford, N.J., native is now ranked No. 5 at 165 pounds by Intermat and is 8-0 on the season. McFadden returns in 2017-18 after sitting out last season while recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered at the 2016 NCAA Championships. He placed sixth at nationals that season and was named 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year.
The No. 9 Hokies will travel to Chattanooga this week for a 7 p.m. dual on Friday, Nov. 17, before returning to Cassell Coliseum for a ranked matchup with No. 17 Central Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m.
Less than 250 tickets remain for the Hokies dual with No. 5 Missouri at the Moss Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 25. Tickets can be purchased by clicking on the link at the top of the page.
