Multiple Hokies set to take the mat at the U.S. Open

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech wrestling program will have multiple representatives at the U.S. Open this weekend in Las Vegas as the Hokies will have wrestlers competing in the Senior Freestyle Nationals and the United World Wrestling Junior Nationals.

First-year assistant coach Frank Molinaro, ranked No. 1 in the United States senior men’s freestyle rankings at 65 kg, and redshirt senior Ty Walz, wrestling at 97 kg, will contend for a spot at the 2017 World Team Trials at the Senior Freestyle Nationals from April 28-29. The top seven grapplers in each weight class will move on to the Team Trials, set to take place in Lincoln, Nebraska from June 9-10.

The following Hokies will be competing at UWW Junior Nationals from April 27-29:
David McFadden: 74 kg
Andrew Mehrholz: 63 kg
Jarrett Degen: 65 kg
Andrew Dunn: 120 kg

McFadden, who’s coming off a redshirt season as he recovered from knee surgery, went 27-11 as a freshman in 2016 where he placed sixth at NCAA Championships and was named the ACC Freshman of the Year.
