Walz brings home championship at Cliff Keen Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Five Virginia Tech wrestlers placed at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, led by two finalists, in the two-day competition which concluded Saturday evening inside the Las Vegas Convention Center. In the team race, the Hokies finished in sixth place with 91.0 points, despite competing in only seven of 10 weight classes.

Joey Dance (125 pounds) and Ty Walz (heavyweight) each reached the finals of their respective weight class. With a 7-3 decision in the semifinals and a wire-to-wire 5-3 victory in the finals, Walz picked up the first Cliff Keen Las Vegas championship in program history. Also placing were Solomon Chishko (fifth at 141), Jared Haught (sixth at 197) and Zack Zavatsky (third at 184).

The Hokies, ranked sixth in the country as a dual meet team at 3-1, will be off until January 3, when they head north to take on George Mason. Several members of the team will compete in the Nittany Lion Open Sunday at Penn State as well.
