Devin Carter named first-team Academic All-American
Wrestler named to men's at-large squad

BLACKSBURG - The awards keep coming for Virginia Tech wrestler Devin Carter, both for his work on the mat and in the classroom.

Having already completed his athletic career as a three-time All-American, four-time ACC champion and national runner-up at 141 pounds, the Christiansburg, Virginia, native added an impressive piece of hardwood to his trophy case Thursday, as he was named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s At-Large team, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as a first-team selection.

Carter re-wrote the record book at Virginia Tech. He won 121 career matches with 38 pins and became the school’s first NCAA finalist when he advanced to the final match at the 2014 Championships. Also a 2014 Academic All-America selection to the at-large squad as a second-teamer, he was also named ACC’s Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year last year. He is the only three-time All-American in program history and his 19 NCAA Championship wins are a school record.

He has been admitted into a Ph.D. track in industrial/organizational psychology program at Tech and will begin his studies in the fall. He earned his Master’s degree in education with a focus on curriculum and instruction last month after graduating in May 2014 with a degree in psychology.

Carter is the second Academic All-American in Tech wrestling history, and the first to earn the honor twice. Heavyweight Mike Faust was a third-team selection in 2006, the same year he earned All-America honors on the mat.

The at-large team for the Capital One Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; and bowling, rowing and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.

Carter was already awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship ($7,500) and one of the Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships by the ACC earlier this year ($5,000).
