BLACKSBURG - Former Virginia Tech wrestler Devin Carter has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, as announced this week by the organization. As a recipient of the scholarship, Carter will receive a one-time, non-renewable $7,500 award to be used during the next three academic years. The Christiansburg, Virginia, native has been admitted into a PhD track in industrial/organizational psychology program at Tech and will begin his studies in the fall. He earned his Master’s degree in education with a focus on curriculum and instruction last month after graduating in May 2014 with a degree in psychology.
Carter was already awarded one of the Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships by the ACC earlier this year, which are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $5,000 toward his or her graduate education.
A four-time ACC champion and three-time All-American, Carter re-wrote the record book at Virginia Tech. He won 121 career matches with 38 pins and became the school’s first NCAA finalist when he advanced to the final match at the 2014 Championships. A 2014 Academic All-America selection to the at-large squad, he was also named ACC’s Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year last year. He is the only three-time All-American in program history and his 19 NCAA Championship wins are a school record.
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The scholarships are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.
