FERRUM, Va. - Fresh off a third straight Top-10 finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Virginia Tech hauled in the state’s top hardware on the 2015 VaSID All-State Team. Devin Carter earned Wrestler of the Year, Zach Epperly Rookie of the Year and Kevin Dresser Coach of the Year.
Carter closed out his career with a third-place finish at the national championships at 141 pounds. He went 32-3 this season and won the ACC title. Carter was selected to participate in the NWCA All-Star Classic as a showcase match, where he defeated Penn’s C.J. Cobb 17-11 in an exhibition match. Epperly placed seventh at the NCAA Tournament, wrestling at 174 pounds. He closed the season at 24-8. His pin over No. 13 Mark Martin in overtime helped Virginia Tech upset No. 4 Ohio State.
Dresser led the Hokies to a 14-2 dual meet record and was named ACC Coach of the Year for the third straight season. He produced four All-Americans and led Virginia Tech to a win over eventual national champion Ohio State. Dresser’s squad captured the ACC dual meet championship and won the 2015 Virginia Duals.
Joining Carter and Epperly on the all-state first team were teammates Joey Dance (125), Nick Brascetta (157) and Ty Walt (285). The University of Virginia had a pair of first team selections in George DiCamillo (133) and Nick Sulzer (165), as did Old Dominion University in Alexander Richardson (149) and Jack Dechow (184). Ferrum College’s Nick Rodriguez (197) rounded out the first team.
Old Dominion landed three wrestlers on the All-State second team, while Virginia and Virginia Tech (Kevin Norstrem at 133 pounds and Sal Mastriani at 149 pounds) had two each. Washington and Lee University, George Mason University and the Apprentice School each had one selection. The complete team is linked above.
