BLACKSBURG - The awards keep coming for Virginia Tech wrestler Devin Carter, both for his work on the mat and in the classroom.

Already a two-time athletics All-American and national runner-up at 141 pounds, the Christiansburg, Virginia, native added an impressive piece of hardwood to his trophy case Thursday, as he was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s At-Large team, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He was a second-team selection.

A three-time ACC champion, Carter has 89 career wins - the 12th-most in program history - and 31 career pins - the third-most in school history. Last year, he went 18-1 and became Tech’s first NCAA finalist in wrestling. The psychology major was also named to the All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team, earning Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades, and was a member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic squad.

He graduated last month with a degree in psychology, finishing with a 3.71 cumulative GPA, and is currently in graduate school for curriculum and instruction.

Carter is the second Academic All-American in Tech wrestling history, joining heavyweight Mike Faust, who was a third-team selection in 2006, the same year he earned All-America honors on the mat. Carter is the 65th Capital One Academic All-America selection as voted on by CoSIDA in Virginia Tech history.

The at-large team for the Capital One Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; and bowling, rowing and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.
