FAIRFAX, Va. - Devin Carter jumped out to a 3-1 lead on top-ranked Tony Ramos, but Ramos showed why he was in the national finals last year, storming back with a takedown late in the third period and one in sudden victory to take a 5-3 exhibition win at the NWCA All-Star Classic Saturday night at the Patriot Center. The out-of-weight- bout does not count for either wrestler in their season or career ledgers.

After a scoreless first period, Ramos, the top-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, escaped to take a 1-0 lead. Carter, who has bumped up to 141 pounds this season, used a slick move to pick up the takedown and then rode Ramos for over a minute to take a 2-1 lead to the third stanza.

In the third period, Carter escaped but not until Ramos erased the riding time advantage. Late in the period, with both men on their feet, Ramos got the takedown to tie the match and rode Carter out to force overtime. There, he got in on Carter’s legs and took him down for the win.

“What a tough match and obviously Devin got tired at the end,” said Tech head coach Kevin Dresser. “This was the first time getting down to weight and it showed. This will fuel Devin for the rest of the year.”

Carter is just the second Virginia Tech wrestler to participate in the prestigious event, joining All-American Sean Gray, who wrestled in the event twice.

The Christiansburg native earned All-America honors two seasons ago at 133 pounds, but is coming off a redshirt season from last year.

Carter and the rest of the eighth-ranked Hokies will open the season next Friday night, taking on Hofstra at the Salem Civic Center beginning at 7 p.m. Two days later, the Tech wrestling program will host the Hokie Duals and Hokie Open, both beginning at 9 a.m. inside the Civic Center.
