Virginia Tech wrestler Devin Carter took third place Saturday in the prestigious NYAC Holiday Invitational in New York City, a top international event. The junior, who is scheduled to redshirt for Virginia Tech, wrestled at 60kg in the freestyle competition, placing third. Carter won his first two matches to advance to the semifinals, where he was beaten by eventual champion Jimmy Kennedy. In the consolations, he picked up a pin over Russia’s Artas Sanaa and then beat Andrew Hochstrasser, who placed fourth at the Olympic Trials, to take third.
On Sunday, led by Sam Law, five Hokie wrestlers placed at the Wolfpack Open hosted by NC State. Law was the high finisher, going 4-1 to place second. Also placing while representing Virginia Tech was Huston Evans (fifth at 174). Placing while wrestling unattached were: Matt Stephens (fifth at 157); Chris Moon (fourth at 165); and Chris Penny (fifth at 285). Matt Peters, Darren Hankins, John Dickson and Ty Walz were scheduled to wrestle for seventh place at their respective weight classes, but those bouts weren’t wrestled.
Updated season records can be found here. Of note, results against Division II or III competitors, as well as forfeit wins, count toward season and career results, but not toward NCAA qualification while results against unattached competitors count toward season and career results, and can count toward NCAA qualification if they are on an NCAA roster. Forfeit losses do not count as losses against a wrestler or in NCAA qualification. Injury defaults, both wins and losses, count toward season stats and NCAA qualification.
