GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina 141-pound freshman Evan Henderson and Virginia Tech 133-pound sophomore Devin Carter have been named the first ACC Wrestlers of the Week for the 2011-12 season after a strong opening weekend that saw each claim his weight class title at the Hokie Open in Salem, Va.
Virginia Tech’s Carter picked up where he left off last season, when he claimed ACC Co-Freshman of the Year honors. Carter went 5-0 for the weekend, picking up four pins and a technical fall. He opened the season with a pin of Tanner Bidlespach in a dual meet against Campbell and then won the 133-pound class at the Hokie Open by going 4-0, picking up three pins and a technical fall. Carter, of Christiansburg, Va., pinned Duke freshman Brandon Gambucci in 2:11 in the 133-pound final.
Henderson opened his career in impressive fashion as he claimed the top spot at 141 pounds at the Hokie Open. The New Florence, Pa., native rolled his way to the semifinals with a pair of pins and a major decision before knocking off No. 15 Darrius Little of rival NC State, 9-5. Henderson capped off a dominant opening weekend with a 7-4 decision over The Citadel’s Khishignyam Undrakhbayer for the tournament title.
